Program Director, General Studies
David Cooper is a Chicago native. He takes buses and trains to get around the city, and prides himself in knowing how to drive in snow, ice, heat, and pouring rain. Mr. Cooper enjoys being Northwestern College’s General Education Program Director because he is able to collaborate with others on a variety of projects, and teach five courses per year. Mr. Cooper started teaching Writing in 1991 and views teaching as a way to empower people to reach their goals through effective communication.
Dave’s background includes being a member of The Chicago Poetry Ensemble, a performance poetry group which wrote and performed original work at theaters, bars, and cafes from 1985 – 1991. He has also managed industrial and commercial real estate, sold odd lots of merchandize at flee-markets, and put himself through graduate school by working odd jobs, the oddest of which was when he spent an entire day spraying scent onto frozen pizzas so they would smell their best while cooking.
Mr. Cooper holds a Master degree in English Literature from Northeastern Illinois University, and a Bachelor degree in Radio and Television from Southern Illinois University. He enjoys taking road trips with his wife to visit their 21 year old daughter in Iowa City, Iowa, and his 19 year old son in Madison Wisconsin, and when he’s home he likes to read, write, swim, and play guitar.
