Earning your sonography degree is a great way to make yourself an indispensable part of the healthcare community. Sonographers are qualified professionals who specialize in the use of ultrasound technology to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, diseases and injuries. Graduates of the program can expect to secure entry level employment as a diagnostic medical sonographer in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices and various out-patient healthcare facilities.
Because this is such a highly specialized field, sonographers are held to high standards—and at Northwestern College we pride ourselves in ensuring that we provide our students with the best quality education and clinical experience needed in the workforce.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Northwestern College provides students with qualified instructors, state-of-the-art equipment, and a curriculum that challenges you each and every day, sonography programs like ours are exactly what you want.
When it comes to qualified instructors, industry-standard training equipment, and a curriculum that challenges you each and every day, sonography programs like ours are exactly what you want.
Ultrasound Degrees and the Sonography Profession
Ultrasound technology is most often associated with maternal health, as it is the equipment used in obstetric offices to visualize the baby’s development in the womb. While this is a big part of sonography training, it’s not everything the field has to offer. Ultrasound can be used to image just about any part of the body such as abdominal organs, the heart, blood vessels, the brain, and the musculoskeletal system, just to name a few.
With so much to learn, the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Northwestern College is a two-year degree program. To ensure that we provide students with the best training, we keep class sizes small and provide a well-balanced approach that includes one-on-one instruction, hands on training, group seminars, and real-world working experience.
It’s this combination of independent and group study that makes our sonography program so competitive. Although sonography requires professionals to work on their own and directly with patients, it is still a team-focused field. You’ll not only be part of the medical office team, but you’ll also work side-by-side with radiologists to perform specialized exams.
Becoming a Sonographer
Graduates of Northwestern College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree program are trained for entry-level sonographer positions and prepared to pass the General Sonography exam administered by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Upon successful completion of the exam, students will be certified and may add the initials R.T.(S) (ARRT) after their name.
Because so many different medical departments and offices utilize sonography equipment, earning a diagnostic medical sonography degree puts you in a highly-sought after profession. We can’t promise it will always be easy, but we will do our best to ensure that you have all the tools you need to succeed. From modern sonography equipment and educational resources to the Northwestern College support network, we have you covered.
Upon completion of the program, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Obtain, review, and integrate pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results

A loan is a borrowed money that is expected to be paid back with interest. When you take out a student loan, you are making a legal obligation to repay the loan, so carefully consider the amount you borrow. Be a responsible borrower and borrow only what you need. Learn More
